Campus Pastor Soren Schmidt talks eventful April and Campus Ministry

March 30, 2018

With Easter right around the corner, campus pastor Soren Schmidt visited Finlandia Fridays this week to promote the multitude of events taking place within the next month. To kick of the episode, Schmidt made an announcement about the Good Friday service that will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Saint Matthew. The service will be an “all-in-one” service to celebrate the sacred holiday of Easter. Doors will be open to all students and any community members who would like to come and celebrate.

Bishop Munib Younan

After Easter, FinnU will be hosting guest speaker Bishop Munib Younan. Bishop Younan was formerly the president of the Lutheran World Federation and is currently the bishop of Jordan and the Holy Land. He will be on campus Monday April 2, speaking in multiple classes and at 7 p.m. giving a talk on dialogues between Christian, Muslim and Jewish faith conversations.

The Table and Mobile Food Pantry

The Table is a student food pantry, run in the lower level of the Chapel of Saint Matthew, to assist students in need. This year the Table has been utilized more and is gaining more recognition on campus. Stocked by generous donors, the Table offers a variety of needs outside of food. To continue with the hunger outreach program, Schmidt stated that the campus will be partnering with Feeding America with another mobile food pantry, this time in Ontonagon on April 19 from 4p.m. to 7 p.m.

School Plays

After bringing back campus productions last year, Schmidt is directing two one-act plays this year, which will show the second week of April. The productions are Chester Who Painted the World Purple and I Dream Before Taking a Stand, both of which are relatively new productions. In Chester Who Painted the World Purple, the play centers on main character Chester, whose grandfather is going blind and can only see the color purple. I Dream Before Taking a Stand focuses on sexual harassment, which has been emphasized with awareness events like It’s On Us on campus all year.

Curling Club

The Finlandia Curling Club is making a comeback next year. For any students and faculty interested in joining, contact Soren Schmidt for more information.
