The Copper Country and the Keweenaw Peninsula

Fall Outdoor SceneFinlandia University is located in the beautifully rugged Upper Peninsula town of Hancock, Michigan. The area features a rich immigrant and mining history and offers many outdoor recreational opportunities and cultural events. Finlandia is only minutes away from Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. Year-round, students enjoy hiking, camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, snowshoeing, skating, ice hockey, and skiing.

When in the Keweenaw, one is never far from some body of water, be it lake, river or stream. The peninsula itself has been severed from the mainland by The Portage Shipping Canal, making it essentially an island that can only be reached by automobile via the Portage Lift Bridge.

The elevated terrain of The Mineral Range, a rocky outcrop running the length of the peninsula, creates many streams tumbling into Lake Superior.

Lake Superior exercises quite an influence over the Keweenaw. Known as "lake effect," this influence means cooler summers and warmer winters than the Central U.P., and of course, a lot more snow.
