Finlandia Leads MCHA All-Academic Team

HANCOCK – For the third year, Finlandia University leads the Midwest College Hockey Association (MCHA) All-Academic Team with 12 players.

They are sophomores Brandon Vanacker (3.558) and Bryan Solander (3.475); juniors Matthew Krueger (3.974), Marc “Tiger” Marcotte (3.668), and Blake Miller (3.581); and seniors Travis Hanson (3.725), Mike Parks (3.713), Matt Lindgren (3.713), Ryan Sullivan (3.512), Lucas Alberer (3.450), Josh Paquette (3.321), and C.J. Fisher (3.245).

The MCHA All-Academic Team will be announced this weekend at MCHA Harris Cup playoff games at the Kern Center in Milwaukee.

FU Women Face UW-River Falls Friday in NCHA Playoff

HANCOCK – The Finlandia University Lions women’s hockey team will face University of Wisconsin-River Falls this Friday, February 29, at 3:00 p.m., in Superior, Wisc., in the first round of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O’Brien Cup playoffs.

The winner of Friday’s contest will play either UW-Superior or UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, March 1, in a ‘final-four’ series.

The NCHA O’Brien Cup championship game will take place Sunday, March 2, at 3:00 p.m. Also Sunday, a contest to determine the third place winner will begin at 11:00 a.m.

Finlandia to Face Northland in MCHA First Round Playoffs

HANCOCK – -The Finlandia University Lions will face Northland College (Ashland, Wisc.) this weekend in the first round of Midwest College Hockey Association (MCHA) 2007-08 season playoffs.

The Lions play Friday, February 22, at 7:15 p.m., and Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m. Both contests will be played at the Houghton County Arena, Hancock.

Finlandia placed first in the MCHA northern division this season, and third place league-wide. The Lions finished the season with a league record of 14-6, and an overall season record of 15-8.

Finlandia drew second seed in the tournament. Northland College is rated seventh seed. The winners of this weekend’s playoff series will advance to the MCHA Final Four to be played in Milwaukee the weekend of February 29-30.

FU’s Marcotte MCHA Player of the Week

HANCOCK – Finlandia University Lions junior ice hockey defenseman Tiger Marcotte (L’Anse, Mich.) has earned a second MCHA Defensive Player of the Week award.

On Friday, February 15, Marcotte helped the Finlandia defense shut down Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisc.), limiting them to an 0-for-7 showing on the power play. Then, on Saturday, he had two assists in the win while limiting Lawrence to a 1-for-8 showing on the power play.

FU’s Tincknell Earns Third Player of Week Award

HANCOCK – For the third time this academic year Finlandia University sophomore forward Ally Tincknell (Negaunee, Mich.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s basketball Player of the Week.

Tincknell led the Lions to a pair of victories on the week, shooting an impressive 71% from the field. In a February 11 win over Northland College, she tallied 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting and also grabbed 12 rebounds. And, in a win against Northland Baptist Bible College February 16, she posted 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also compiled six rebounds and three steals.

“Ally has a great attitude and an unbelievable passion for the game,” says Curtis Wittenberg, head women’s basketball coach. “She’s is a hard worker, in practice and in games, and consistent game after game.”

New Start Time for Saturday’s FU Hockey Game

HANCOCK – The start time of the Saturday, February 16, Finlandia University men’s hockey contest against Lawrence University has been changed.

The new start time is 4:00 p.m. at the Houghton County Arena, Hancock.

FU Men’s Hockey Seniors to be Honored Friday

HANCOCK – The Finlandia University men’s hockey team senior-level players will be honored prior to this Friday’s home contest against Lawrence University.

The game starts at 7:15 p.m. at the Houghton County Arena, Hancock.

The seniors are Lukas Alberer (Austria), Jason Aldrich (Hancock), Joe Beaudry (Marquette), C.J. Fisher (Yakima, Wash.), Travis Hanson (Baraga), Matt Lindgren (Marysville, Mich.), Blake Miller (Hancock), Derek Onkalo (Chassell), Josh Paquette (Marquette), Mike Parks (Marquette), Mitch Tallant (Garland, Tex.), and Brad VanTassel (Houghton).

FU’s Donovan MCHA Freshman of the Week

HANCOCK – -Finlandia University Lions freshman goalie Ryan Donovan (Pinckney, Mich.) is the MCHA Freshman of the Week for the second time this year.

He earns the honors for his effort between the pipes against University of Minnesota-Crookston. He stopped 20 of 22 shots Friday and then 26 of 27 in Saturday’s win (.939 save percentage overall) while limiting the Golden Eagles to a 1-for-15 showing on the power play in the series.

“Ryan played very well this weekend,” said Finlandia head men’s hockey coach Joe Burcar. “Minn-Crookston is a challenging place to play and he earned two hard fought victories.”

Donovan was also named MCHA Freshman of the Week December 10, 2007, for his play in the Lions’ sweep of University of Minnesota-Crookston December 7 and 8.

Seniors to be Honored at Saturday’s Game

HANCOCK – The Finlandia University women’s hockey team’s five senior-level players will be honored prior to this Saturday’s home contest against Adrian College.

The game starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Houghton County Arena, Hancock.

The four seniors are accounting major Samantha Fisher, Yakima, Wash., human services major Ashley Leitch, Garden City, Mich., sports management major Danielle Syrowk, Shelby Township, Mich., and liberal studies majors Brenda Peterson, Calumet, Mich., and Corinne Czekaj, Livonia, Mich.

FU’s Tincknell Independents Player of Week

HANCOCK – Finlandia University sophomore forward Ally Tincknell (Negaunee, Mich.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season.

On the weekend, Tincknell helped her team to a 1-1 record by averaging 23.5 points and 11 rebounds per contest. She also shot 57.7% from the floor and 70.8% from the charity stripe.

In a 61-49 victory over Rochester College February 1, she tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. On February 2, she added 32 points and 12 boards in a tough 74-66 loss to Marygrove College.

“Ally has been a solid player for us game in and game out,” said Curtis Wittenberg, head women's basketball coach.
