Courage to Think Differently: Exploring a Christian Response to Hunger, Poverty, and Injustice

Course Description:

Students taking this class can expect a lively, serious, and bold exploration of themes central to the message of Christian Scripture: hunger, poverty, and injustice.  Students will discuss together selected essays from the book, Courage to Think Differently by George Johnson, a collection of writings that Walter Brueggemann describes as “a call to venturesome imagination.” Alongside these readings, students will engage Old and New Testament texts that address these themes and consider together their relevance and application for a life of faith today.

For any person wishing to be part of a shared reading experience that urges courage to reflect, act, and risk for the sake of a newly imagined life of faith.

Will I need to purchase a textbook?

Not all classes will require the purchase of a textbook. This can be confirmed by contacting the
instructor. Additional information about each course can also be obtained by contacting the

What methods of payment are accepted?
Finlandia prefers you use the on-line payment option available on the on-line registration form. You
may also write a check to Finlandia University and send it to:

What if I can’t attend every week?

This is acceptable. Consistent attendance, however, will enrich your overall experience.

Can I stop attending at any time?

Yes. Here’s our Refund Policy:
A 100% refund for an enrichment class will be provided when a written or emailed refund request
form is received by the Business Office prior to the course start date or if the course is canceled by
the college.

A 75% refund is available if the student officially withdraws from a course within the first three (3)
weeks of the class. A written or emailed request must be received by the Business Office before or
on the date of the 3 rd week. Students can obtain the “refund date” from their instructor at the first
course meeting.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Certificates of Completion will be offered upon request to those who have no greater than 2
absences.
