MI – The Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) and
Finlandia University invite area entrepreneurs to take advantage
of free one-on-one business counseling sessions at the university’s
Jutila Center for Global Design and Business (CGDB) on Thursday,
May 8, 2008.
Business consultant Roger Woods of Homer Productivity, LLC, can
advise on all aspects of small business development from the initial
idea through growth and expansion strategies.

The CGDB is located at the Finlandia University Portage Campus (formerly
Portage Hospital), at 200 Michigan St., Hancock.

Point Guard College Rescheduled to June 1
The
Finlandia University Point Guard College basketball clinic, originally
scheduled for April 12, has been rescheduled.
The basketball clinic will take place Sunday, June 1, 2008, from
12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m., at Finlandia’s Paavo Nurmi Center
gymnasium, Hancock.
All athletes who plan to attend, including those who previously
registered, should contact Curtis Wittenberg, Finlandia head women’s
basketball coach, at 906-487-7214 or curtis.wittenberg@finlandia.edu.
The Point Guard College basketball clinic is designed for the dedicated
athlete. It aims to improve leadership, develop fundamentals, and
create a deeper understanding of the game.
The clinic will be led by former All-American and 2007 WNBA Indiana
Fever draftee, Lyndsey Meddars. A four year starter at Iowa State
University, Meddars will teach participants the same skills, fundamentals,
and essentials that helped her lead the nation in assists in 2005-2006.
The cost of the clinic is $75 per athlete or $25 per observing coach
(includes lunch). Participating athletes must currently be in at
least the 8th grade, on up to college. The clinic is limited to
60 athletes.

School of Art & Design BFA Diploma Works Exhibition

p.m.
HANCOCK, MI – From April 21 to May 22, 2008, an exhibit of
the artwork of the 23 graduating seniors of the Finlandia University
International School of Art & Design is featured at the Finlandia
University Gallery and the Reflection Gallery at Finlandia’s
Portage Campus.
Two receptions for the artists will take place Saturday evening,
April 26. The receptions are free and open to the public. Refreshments
will be served.
At 6:45 p.m., Saturday, April 26, a reception for the artists whose
work is featured at the Finlandia University Gallery will take place
at that gallery.
At 8:00 p.m., Saturday, April 26, a reception for the artists whose
work is featured at the Reflection Gallery will take place at Finlandia’s
Portage Campus.
The exhibited “diploma works” represent the final body
of student work for each graduate. This year’s class of 23
is the largest-ever class of Finlandia bachelor of fine arts (BFA)
graduates. Included are intensive research projects, series of individual
artworks, design prototypes, and work in various other traditional
and non-traditional mediums.
The Finlandia University Gallery is in the Finnish American Heritage
Center, Hancock. The Reflection Gallery is on the second level Finlandia’s
Portage Campus at 200 Michigan Street, Hancock.
Finlandia University Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday 8:30 to 7:00 pm, or by appointment.
Finlandia’s Portage Campus is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday.

Finnish Interests Forum Rescheduled to May 3
HANCOCK
– The U.P. Finnish Interests Forum, originally scheduled for
April 12, has been rescheduled.
The forum will take place Saturday, May 3, 2008, beginning with
lunch at 12:30 p.m., at the Finlandia University Finnish American
Heritage Center.
The purpose of the event is to gather the greater Finnish-American
community of the U.P. and bordering areas to brainstorm ideas for
increased cooperation among those involved in Finnish culture, heritage,
and language activities.
The forum is organized by the Finnish American Heritage Center and
the City of Hancock’s Finnish Theme Committee, a Finlandia
Foundation chapter.
The event is free and open to the public. To assist the meal hosts,

Finland’s
Ambassador Lintu to Speak at Finlandia University Commencement
HANCOCK,
MI – Finlandia University is pleased to announce that its
2008 Commencement exercises will take place Sunday, April 27, 2008,
at 2:00 p.m., at the Paavo Nurmi Center, Hancock.
A Baccalaureate worship service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Sunday,
April 27, at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Rev. Virginia
Peacock, rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Houghton, will
deliver the sermon.
The Honorable Pekku Lintu, Ambassador of Finland to the United States
since January 2006, will deliver the commencement address. He will
also be granted an honorary doctorate. Lintu is a member of the
Finlandia University President’s Council.
Class of 2008 Valedictorian Nancy Lynn Kauppila (Calumet, Mich.),
a Nursing graduate, and 1983 Suomi College alumna Regina Sobieski
will also speak.
Also during Commencement ceremonies, the local choral quartet, “Borealis”
will perform.
Finlandia University will award diplomas to 122 winter, spring and
summer graduation candidates.
Degrees to be conferred to Finlandia’s Class of 2008 are:
11 Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in Elementary Education, 5 B.A.s
in Liberal Studies, and 14 B.A.s in Human Services; 17 Bachelor
of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degrees; 21 Bachelor of Business
Administration (B.B.A.) degrees; 22 Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)
degrees; 8 Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in Criminal
Justice, 18 A.A.S.’s in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA);
and 6 Associate of General Studies (A.G.S.) degrees.

Annual Sibelius Academy Music Festival July 30 – August 1

MI – The 10th Annual Finlandia University Sibelius Academy
Music Festival concerts will take place July 30 to August 1, 2008.
Gifted professional-level musicians from the Sibelius Academy of
Helsinki, Finland, travel annually to Finlandia University to present
these one-of-a-kind North American performances. This year’s
performances will take place as follows:

Men’s Basketball Fish Fry Dinner April 25
HANCOCK,
MI – The Finlandia University men’s basketball team,
in partnership with Peterson’s Fish Market of Hancock, will
host a Fish Fry Dinner Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Finlandia
Hall Café in the university’s residence hall.
The buffet dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Proceeds
will benefit the Finlandia men’s basketball team.
Tickets are $10.00 per person; and $7.00 for each child under 12.
Advance tickets can be purchased from any Finlandia men’s
basketball player, and at the following Hancock businesses: North
Wind Books, Superior National Bank, and Peterson’s Fish Market.

Youth Basketball Camp May 5-8
HANCOCK
– The annual four-day Finlandia University Boys and Girls
Fundamental Basketball Camp will take place May 5 to 8, 2008, in
the gymnasium at Finlandia’s Paavo Nurmi Center, Hancock.
The camp is open to youth in grades three to nine.
On each of the days, grades 3 and 4 will meet from 5:00 to 6:30
p.m.; grades 5 and 6 will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.; and grades
7, 8, and 9 will meet from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.
The basketball camp will be directed by Finlandia men’s and
women’s basketball coaches Charlie Kemppainen and Curtis Wittenberg.
The cost of the camp is $35 per player. Each camper will receive
a basketball
