What is Army ROTC?

Finlandia University cooperates with Michigan Technological University to offer interested students the opportunity to participate in Army ROTC.

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is a college course designed to give students the necessary skills and leadership training to become officers in the United States Army, Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard. Through ROTC, students (also called cadets) develop maturity, responsibility, leadership skills, and, above all, self-confidence. The program stresses 16 leadership dimensions that help train cadets for the responsibility and leadership that tomorrow’s leaders will need.

ROTC students may have the opportunity to attend various military schools, including Airborne, Northern Warfare, Air Assault, Scuba Divers, Mountain Warfare, and others. All cadets are encouraged to participate in ROTC’s Ranger Challenge Team, Color Guard, or Drill Team. All these activities sharpen leadership skills and offer exciting, competitive adventure.

Taking an Army ROTC course does not mean that you have joined the Army. There is no service obligation for students who take part in the freshmen courses. Service obligation begins at the beginning of the sophomore year with acceptance of an Army ROTC scholarship.

Army ROTC can help you pay for college.

Army ROTC awards two-, three-, and four-year student scholarships. Awarded on merit—such as academic achievement, extracurricular activities, or athletic and leadership accomplishments—an Army ROTC scholarship pays 100% of tuition and required fees. Scholarship recipients receive an allowance for books and a monthly stipend for up to ten academic months per year ($300 for freshman, $350 for sophomores, $450 for juniors, and $550 for seniors). During the junior and senior years of study, non-ROTC scholarship students contracted as cadets may also qualify for the stipend.

Students awarded an Army ROTC scholarship have a commitment to the Army after completing the program. The commitment is fulfilled by serving part-time in the Army National Guard or Army Reserves, or serving full-time on active duty.
