U.P.
Finnish Interests Forum April 12
HANCOCK
– For a few years now, Jim Kurtti has felt that the greater
Finnish-American community of the U.P. and bordering areas could
benefit from increased cooperation among those involved in Finnish
culture, heritage, and language activities.
In polling numerous people across the Upper Peninsula, Kurtti, director
of the Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center, found
that many others feel the same way.
“There is sufficient interest in having a gathering of people
representing Finnish interests – organizations, groups, and
individuals – to explore areas where cooperation and networking
might strengthen what we offer the Finnish-American community,”
Kurtti says.
To this end, the Finnish American Heritage Center and the City of
Hancock’s Finnish Theme Committee, a Finlandia Foundation
chapter, have organized this first-ever forum.
The gathering will take place April 12, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at
Finlandia’s Finnish American Heritage Center.
“The central goal is to discuss areas of cooperation,”
Kurtti explains. “We have also invited people to participate
in two panel discussions to explore concrete scenarios where our
common interests may serve the greater good.”
The brief panel discussions will address Finnish language curriculum
in Upper Peninsula schools and discuss ways to make it easier for
performers, lecturers, and researchers to find their way to, and
around, the U.P.
Other activities will include a presentation by Kurtti titled, “Start
at the Beginning – Web Page, Listserve & That Modern Stuff,”
lunch compliments of the Finnish Theme Committee, and a wrap-up
discussion.
The event is free and open to the public. To assist the meal hosts,
RSVPs are appreciated. For more information, please call Kurtti
at 906-487-7302 or james.kurtti@finlandia.edu.

Theological
Lecture Series April 5, 6
HANCOCK
– Two inter-faith gatherings led by author Rev. Dr. James
Nestingen will take place April 5 and April 6 at the Finlandia University
Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock.
Saturday, April 5, at 7:00 p.m., Nestingen will lead an open community
discussion on the make-up of the Lutheran presence in the Copper
Country. The event, titled “Inter-Lutheran Dialogue,”
addresses the questions: Who are all these Lutherans? What do we
have in common? and What is the future of the Lutheran presence
in the Copper Country?
Sunday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m., he’ll lead a storytelling gathering
titled, “Living Together” in which attendees are encouraged
to share stories of living with and learning from differences.
Nestingen’s visit to the Copper Country is sponsored by the
Siebert Lutheran Foundation and Finlandia Campus Ministry. In addition
to the two public events, Nestingen will guest-lecture at both Finlandia
University and Michigan Tech, and preach at a local congregation.
Professor Emeritus of Church History at Luther Seminary, St. Paul,
Minn., Nestingen has written and spoken prolifically on Luther's
catechisms, and confessional Lutheran theology.
He notes that seventy-five percent of Lutheran congregations are
in towns with populations of 750 or less. To this end, he sees an
important part of his mission as fighting for rural parishes. He
believes the fate of rural parishes gives rise to issues of justice
that the Lutheran faith must address.
Nestingen’s books include: Martin Luther: His Life and
His Teachings (2004, 1982); Manger in the Mountains
(2000); The Faith We Hold (1983); Roots of Our Faith
(1978); and Free to Be (with Gerhard Forde, 1975).
For additional information please contact Angela Book, assistant
to the campus pastor, at 906-487-7265 or angela.book@finlandia.edu.

“Elling”
is April 10 Nordic Film
HANCOCK
– The Finlandia University Nordic Film Series continues Thursday,
April 10, with the Norwegian film, “Elling.” Showings
will begin at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Released in 2002, Elling is a humorous and warm story about venturing
into life. Funny without being insensitive and moving without being
sentimental, the film is a celebration of an enduring, oddball friendship.
After two-years at a psychiatric hospital, Elling and his somewhat
denser roommate, Kjell Bjarne, return to the so-called real world.
The mismatched pair is given an apartment in Oslo in an attempt
to get them to behave like responsible citizens.
For someone who finds crossing a restaurant floor comparable to
a South Pole expedition, and for whom going round the corner for
groceries holds untold terrors, Elling’s new life involves
a number of challenges that need surmounting.
As Elling’s and Kjell Bjarne’s confidence grows, they
find unusual ways to cope with society and strike up the most peculiar
friendships in the most unlikely places. When Kjell Bjarne meets
a woman, and Norwegian contemporary poetry makes Elling vomit, the
frightened men are forced to give it all they’ve got –
and then some.
“Elling” has won multiple international film awards.
It was a 2002 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film.
The film is in Norwegian with English subtitles. The film is unrated.
If you have questions about its content, please call.
The Finnish American Heritage Center is at 435 Quincy Street, Hancock.
For additional information, call 906-487-7302.
