Comparative Criminal Justice Course in Europe

Students interested in traveling and studying criminal justice have the opportunity to take a trip to Finland.

The course usually lasts 17-18 days and occurs after the end of the spring semester. Students will travel from Hancock to Helsinki. Students usually stay in Helsinki for a night and then travel to Tampere, Finland.

Tampere University is the host institution. This is done in concert with Sheffield Hallam University in the UK, Marquette University, Appalachia State University and Tampere University. Lecturers for the course are from all schools involved.

Students will spend part of the course in Estonia and Russia, touring prison facilities and getting lectures from invited lecturers in those countries.

A student who wishes to participate in the course must take the pre-requisite Criminology (SOC 290) and then enroll in Comparative Criminal Justice Systems (CRJ 491). The cost to the student for travel is $3500. This includes airline, hotel, travel within and between countries, and breakfasts. Students will need to bring money for lunch and dinner.

The University of Tampere is a culturally-committed higher education institution with the social mission of educating visionaries who understand the world and change it.

Tampere, the university’s home city, is Finland’s third biggest city. The profile of the University of Tampere accentuates the university’s multifaceted research and education on society and health.

In its research, the University addresses the central issues in contemporary society. By providing critical knowledge and education, the university helps people and societies improve their health and cultural, social and economic well-being.

The basic values of the University are academic freedom, creativity and social responsibility. This means that everyone has an equal right to learn, to acquire knowledge, to participate and to make an impact on society.
