Greetings From The Office of Academic And Student Affairs
Greetings and welcome to Finlandia University. I am so pleased to be addressing you all in a letter to be included in our new online, digital-only College Catalog. This has been a very exciting year as we launched our new website and catalog. The links across the website and catalog pages have been carefully crafted and connected in a way to provide easy access for students, faculty, advisors, and support personnel to important information and policies. I encourage all to explore.
As we move into this new academic year, we also begin a new adventure through our revised General Education curriculum designed to accompany our newly established institutional learning outcomes. Student learning will be intentionally guided toward competency in the areas of Communication, Analytic and Critical Thinking, Creative Insight, Personal Perspectives, and Global Perspectives. The skillset students develop in these areas will provide a strong foundation upon which to enter the 21st century workplace or in pursuit of a graduate education.
Campus-wide co-curricular activities and events are underway to help students expand their horizons through avenues that enhance traditional classroom learning. Our campus read, for instance, revolves around the work of author Danez Smith. Smith has published two recent books of poetry, [insert] Boy, and Black Movie. Please mark your calendars for a 7 p.m. reading by the author on Friday September 30th.
In addition to our campus read, there are a host of events scheduled in the fall marking our celebration of the color season through Festival Ruska. The schedule begins on September 20th with a lecture by Juhani Ihanus and concludes on October 13th with the Nordic Film Series screening of Kristin Ojaniemi’s documentary UP a River- Goin’ to Camp. Check out our new website for details of these events and the many other activities we host throughout the year.
Again, welcome to the new academic year. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and successful year!
