In his post-doctoral research project, Dr. Samuli Korkalainen from Helsinki, Finland is focusing on Finnish-American church music from the late 19th century onwards.

He has found hymnals, spiritual songbooks, and other printed and hand-written music written, composed, and edited by Finnish immigrants in the US and Canada – as well as interesting personalities, thoughts, and ideas behind them. Dr. Cassandra Hill named dean of Suomi College of Arts & Sciences

Associate professor will also serve as interim dean of the International School of Art & Design

Finlandia University has hired Dr. Cassandra (Carlson) Hill as dean of Suomi College of Arts & Sciences and interim dean of the International School of Art & Design. Hill began her duties on July 1.

Flu Shot Clinic 2022

FinnU Nursing to host flu shot clinic Oct. 10

Finlandia Nursing will host a flu shot clinic on Monday, October 10, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. in Hirvonen Hall Gymnasium. Hancock School System and Finlandia University students, employees and family members are encouraged to attend. UP Health System Portage staff will be on-site to help administer the clinic.

Several doses of Flucelvax will be available for those with severe egg allergies. The vaccine available will be Afluria Quadrivalent. As of September 23, the most recent VIS form is available

Parade of Nations returns home to Quincy Green

Dozens of Finlandia University students and employees played part in representing nearly 60 countries in Saturday’s Parade of Nations. 

The Parade returned home to Quincy Green this year after being rerouted in 2021. Overlooked by FinnU’s historic Hirvonen Hall, community members gathered as the start of the Parade approached. Celebrating cultural diversity in the Keweenaw, floats and marchers with flags and banners walked down Quincy Street, crossed the Portage Lift Bridge and continued through downtown Houghton. Student Senate invites ideas for Mannerheim Central project

Student Senate President Allison Cooper visited Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about a few upcoming initiatives the group has planned, including the transformation of Mannerheim Central. 

Cooper shared that on the next two upcoming Tuesdays, September 20 and September 27, Student Senate will be stationed outside Finlandia Hall Café from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to hear student opinions on what they would like to see done with the open space in Mannerheim Central.

Ever had Indian food? How about African? Bangladeshi? You can taste all those cuisines and more at this year’s Parade of Nations on Saturday, September 17.

The Parade of Nations starts at 11 a.m. at Quincy Green in Hancock.
