236 - Service & Learning in Tanzania. The
primary learning experience of this course takes place during
three weeks of serving and learning in Tanzania after spring
semester exams. Students participate in weekly seminars
throughout the semester as preparation where students build
upon the concepts and skills developed in REL 230. The
visit to Tanzania is at the invitation of the Eastern &
Coastal Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
The students split their time between a service commitment
at one of the diocese's locations (i.e. a secondary school)
and staying in host homes in Dar es Salaam with a daily schedule
that includes exposure to organizations and institutions that
are responding to health, education and gender concerns in
Tanzania. A 3-day safari is also part of the experience.
Students participate in fund-raisers to offset some of the
travel expenses. 3 credits - offered every spring.
Pre-requisite: REL/SOC 230.
REL/SOC
237 - Servant Leadership for the Local Community.
This course involves students in a service-learning project
that serves a need in the local community. In weekly
seminars students reflect on related readings about serving,
leading and socio-political realities related to their project
or tend to project organizational matters. Students
will keep a service-learning journal to mark their personal
growth and project progress. 3 credits - offered every
odd fall.
Everybody
can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have
to have a college degree to serve. You don't have
to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You
only need a heart full of grace.
