We
spent the week at Camp Atonement, which is just outside of New Orleans
in Metairie, Louisiana. Camp Atonement used to be a 'tent
city,' but before we arrived it had been upgraded from tents to
converted cargo carriers. The camp can house up to 120 disaster
relief volunteers. We had been told in advance about the cargo
carriers, and also that we should expect to compete with
a hundred other volunteers for use of the showers, laundry, and
portable toilets. This all sounded a little intimidating,
especially to those of us who were not used to roughing it.
Everything we were told about the camp turned out to be true, but
since the camp wasn't filled to capacity, the conditions were much
better than we anticipated. We could take hot showers
that lasted more than three minutes, the portable toilets were clean,
and the bunks in the converted cargo carriers were actually kind
of comfortable. A few of our more outdoorsy companions
even complained a little about how "cushy" the facilities were.
