Studies at Finlandia University allows students to take courses
in the field as well as participate in a variety of community activities
that focus on Finland or the Finnish-American experience. When students
complete the curriculum they will have knowledge and an understanding
of the Finnish culture.
The Finnish Studies Curriculum consists of:

Her Excellency, Tarja
Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland

University was honored to have Her Excellency, Tarja Halonen,
President of the Republic of Finland as
the 2003 Commencement Speaker and recipient of the honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters.
President
Halonen was elected the 11th President of the Republic of Finland
in February 2000 and assumed the office on March 1, 2000.
She is the first woman to hold the office of President in Finland.
President Halonen has paid close attention to issues of human
rights, democracy, and civil society. Issues concerning
social justice and promotion of equality have been central themes
throughout her political career. She has likewise, long
played an active role in the international solidarity movement.
"It's
easy to be for social justice without caring. (With President
Halonen), social justice is not an election theme to get elected.
It comes from her heart and the depth of her soul. She cares
about people and for that reason...for that deep caring in her
representation of those often without representation, it is my
honor to award to Her Excellency, President Tarja Halonen the
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters." Dr. Robert

Excellency, Jukka Valtasaari, Ambassador of Finland to the United
States |
Finlandia University
was honored to have His Excellency, Jukka Valtasaari, Ambassador
of Finland as the 2005 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Doctoral
Degree Recipient.
Jukka Valtasaari is
the Finnish ambassador to the United States, and is currently
in his second term in this position. Ambassador Valtasaari holds
a master's degree in political science and a licentiate of political
science from the University of Helsinki and was a fellow at Harvard
University from 1976 to 1977. He writes frequently on topics
related to foreign policy and trade. For his notable public service,
Finland and other countries have awarded Ambassador Valtasaari
many decorations. These include serving as Permanent Secretary
for Foreign Affairs in Helsinki and the Permanent Mission of Finland
to the United Nations in Geneva. His decorations include Commander
of the Order of the Lion of Finland, Commander First Class of
the Order of the White Rose of Finland, and the honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters from Finlandia University.
