Basic Grammar & Composition

Course Description-
Students write different types of paragraphs. In the second half of the course they write essays. The class includes grammar and reading of essays and is designed for developmental writers.


Course Goals-
English 101, Basic Grammar & Composition, is designed to improve the student’s reading, writing, critical thinking, and speaking skills, and to give the student a broad understanding of culture and society. Emphasis is on perfecting the paragraph and writing grammatically correct, effective sentences as preparation for the essay.

Course Objectives-
On completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to use paragraphs effectively, creating a topic sentence that captures the main idea of the paragraph and supporting this statement with convincing details, arguments or examples.
2. Correctly apply rules of grammar, mechanics, usage, and sentence structure.
3. Present ideas orally in an organized, coherent, and convincing way.
4. Demonstrate the ability to think critically by identifying an essay’s major ideas, supporting arguments, and their relative strengths and weaknesses.
