THIRD INTERNATIONAL YRJÖ KILPINEN ART SONG COMPETITION

The Yrjö Kilpinen Society of North America announces the results of its Third International Art Song Competition that was held April 9-10 at Edgewood College in Madison.
Semi-finalists competing on Saturday were, Christine Buckstead, Janesville; Erich Buchholz, Chicago; Scott Carlton, New York; Shannon French, Fayetteville, NC; Peter Halverson, Moorhead, MN; Katherine Keyes, New York; Julia Rolwing, North Bergen, NJ and KrisAnne Weiss, St. Paul, MN.
The following singers advanced to the Finals on Sunday:
Winner of the Vernon and Anja Sell Prize of $3,000 was Peter Halverson, a baritone who is a member of the voice faculty at Concordia College. He received his Masters Degree at the University of Wisconsin and is a native of northern Wisconsin.
The Second place prize of $2,250 was awarded to Julia Rolwing, soprano, who was the third place winner at the 2002 Competition.
The $1,500 third place prize was split between Christine Buckstead, soprano and Shannon French, a lyric mezzo-soprano. Buckstead is completing her doctorate degree at the University of Wisconsin and is a member of the music faculty of Beloit College.
The following additional prizes were also awarded:
Anja Sell Award for Finnish Diction ($250) ñ Christine Buckstead
Jussi Björling Award for Presentation of Scandinavian Repertoire ($500) Julia Rolwing
Recital Tour of Finland ñ Peter Halverson
Judges for the event were: Gustav Djupsjöbacka, director of the Sibelius Academy of Music in Finland, Petteri Salomaa, a baritone well known in Europe and professor at Sibelius Academy, Lawrence Weller, associate director of the University of Minnesota School of Music and Ilona Kombrink, professor emerita University of Wisconsin School of Music.
In addition to Ms. Rolwing, Katherine Keyes and KrisAnne Weiss were also return competitors. Ms. Weiss placed second in Division 1 (Student) and Ms. Keyes placed second in Division 2 (professional) at the 1999 competition.
Ilkka Kalliomaa, Cultural Attache for the Consulate General of Finland, New York, attended all of the weekend events and was greatly impressed with the quality of the music and dedication of the local Kilpinen Society members.
