Women
Can't Caputre a Win Versus Hamline - December 18, 2006
The Finlandia
women's hockey program could not stop the Pipers of Hamline University
this weekend, dropping both games, 5-4 and 8-3.
On Friday,
the Pipers scored three power-play goals, including two in the third
period to earn the win despite the many penalties.
The two
teams skated to a 2-2 tie after the first period. Hamline scored
first. The Finlandia answered with two goals of their own. The first
game from Brenda Peterson (Calumet, MI) assisted by Carly Akers
(Lincoln Park, MI) and Jessica Jones (Winnipeg, MB). The second
goal was credited to Emily Conrad ( Marquette , MI ).
The Lions
grabbed a 4-2 lead in the second period after a short-handed goal
by Sara Sleik (Iron Mountain, MI) and power-play goal by Danielle
Syrowik (Shelby Township, MI), but the Pipers answered with a breakaway
goal at 18:34 to make the score 4-3 at the second intermission.
Finlandia
led 4-3 heading into the final period before Hamline scored off
a rebound on a 5-on-3 power play. The goal at 6:17 of the third
period knotted the score at 4-4. Two and a half minutes later, the
Pipers netted another goal to take the lead and the game.
Finlandia
netminder Annika Danielson ( Cokato , MN ) stopped 24 shots in a
losing effort.
In the 8-3
loss on Sunday, Finlandia could not stop the Pipers power play that
went 5-for-7 on the afternoon.
The Lions
went into the locker room after the first intermission down, 3-2.
Sleik scored at 5:55 to tie the game at 1-2. She would later assist
Amy Danielson ( Centerville , MN ) on a power-play goal at 8:10
to give the Lions the lead. FU quickly fell down two minutes later.
The Pipers
scored five straight goals to take a 6-2 advantage and put the game
away.
“Overall,
when we were five versus five, Finlandia statistically outplayed
Hamline from top to bottom,” says third-year head coach Chris Salani
. “However, we gave up a lot of opportunities which Hamline took
advantage of. But as a young team, we will be able to work through
them.”
The Lions
will be off until January 12 when they host Augsburg University
. The first face-off is at 7:15 pm at the Houghton County Arena.

Concordia dominated,” says third-year head coach Chris Salani. “We
recaptured our intensity and discipline on the ice in the second
though.”
The Lions
scored their first goal of the night, a power play goal and eight
minutes into the second period. Kendra Benson ( Harrison Township
, MI ) and Ashley Leitch (Garden City, MI) were credited with the
assists. Senior Bree Cote ( Copperton , UT ) earned the goal. The
Lions were within one at the second intermission.

Sara Sleik ( Iron Mountain , MI ) netted a short-handed goal. A
decision could not be made in the five minutes of overtime.
Katie Markovich
( Southgate , MI ) recorded the tie for the Lions. She tallied 18
saves.
“We played
a much better in the second half of the game,” states Salani. “I
was very happy that we battled back two different times and tied
the game.”
The Lions
are home November 17 and 18 as they face their first NCHA series,
the Lake Forest Foresters. The puck drops Friday at 7:15 pm.
