Lions Named to MCHA All-Tournament Team - March 5, 2008

HANCOCK – Three Finlandia University student-athletes were named to the Midwest College Hockey Association (MCHA) All-Tournament Team following the Harris Cup championship game March 1 at the Kern Center in Milwaukee.

Freshman goalie Ryan Donovan (Pinckney, Mich) was named the Harris Cup Tournament MVP. Junior forward Ryan Sullivan (Marquette, Mich.) and sophomore defenseman Tiger Marcotte (L’Anse, Mich.), were also among the seven players named to the 2008 MCHA All-Tournament team.

“All 3 players had a great weekend,” said Joe Burcar, head men’s ice hockey coach. “Sullivan had two assists in the 4-2 semi-finals win. Marcotte had 1 assist and 1 goal in the semi-final. Donovan played in both the semi-final and championship games, giving up only 3 goals on the entire weekend.”

Finlandia Falls in OT 1-0 in MCHA Championship Game – March 2, 2008

Milwaukee, WI - For the first time all season, the Adrian Bulldogs were held scoreless for three straight periods. In one of the most entertaining games of the season fans saw a great defensive battle. It was not until 2:29 in overtime that the puck crossed the goal line. Eric Miller scored his 40th of the season from Adam Krug and Eric Bailen. Bailen started things off when he passed the puck from inside his own zone to Krug just over his own blue line. Krug spotted Miller near Finlandia’s blue line between two Lion’s defenders. Miller received the pass from Krug at full speed and went in on Finlandia’s goaltender Donovan where he placed the puck in the upper left corner for the Bulldog victory.

In the first period Adrian’s offense spent most their time in the Finlandia’s zone where the Lion’s stellar defensive play held off the hungry dogs aggressive advances. The period had six penalties three for each team. In the second period Finlandia picked up the pace offensively to balance the attack by both teams. Again, the penalties were equal with both Adrian and Finlandia with two each. In the third period there was only one penalty for each team as both teams buckled down and worked hard to try and end the game. Both teams had opportunities to score but both goaltenders held their ground and the period ended deadlocked 0-0. Eric Miller spoiled Finlandia’s back to back Harris Cup victory in the overtime. Adrian record is 26-3-0 while Finlandia finished the season with 18-9-2 record.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - The Finlandia Lions beat the Marian College Sabres on Saturday to put their team in the Championship game on Sunday at 4:00 for the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs at the Kern Center. The Lion’s will meet the Adrian Bulldogs who are ranked ninth in the nation and defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday 5-3 to place themselves in the final game.

Finlandia split two regular season games with the Sabres earlier in the year and the match up was expected to be close. In the first period Ryan Sullivan (Marquette) sent a pass from the lower right circle to the front of the net for Mike Parks (Marquette) who one timed a shot for his sixteenth goal of the year to put the Lion’s up 1-0 at 10:50. The Finlandia Lions beat Northland Saturday 3-1 and will advance to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association semi-finals next Saturday against Marian College in Milwaukee.

Northland Lumberjacks scored first and early in the first period when Rick Delecke notched his fifth goal of the season at 4:02 to give his team a 1-0 lead. After three Finlandia penalties and numerous scoring chances the Lumberjacks kept the lead at the end of the period.

It the second period it didn’t take the Lion’s long to tie the score when Josh Paquette (Marquette) moved the puck out of the Lion’s zone up to Ryan Sullivan (Marquette) who sent a saucer pass to Mike Parks who then buried the puck in the net for his fifteenth score of the season at 1:12. A short time later at 7:35 Joe Beaudry (Marquette) added another score from the top of the left circle for his sixteenth and the game winner. Josh Paquette and Blake Miller (Houghton) assisted. The period ended with Finlandia leading 2-1.

Northland came out strong in the third period and had several opportunities to score to no avail. Joe Beaudry sealed the win with an empty netter at 19:23 to preserve a Finlandia win at 3-1.

The Finlandia Lions won game one of a two game playoff series on Friday night over Northland College. The winner of the two game series will advance to the MCHA final four in Milwaukee on March 1st and 2nd at the Kern Center on the campus of Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Joe Beaudry (Marquette) celebrated his birthday with two goals for the night. Beaudry’s first goal came at 4:22 of the period while the Lion’s were shorthanded with his fourteenth of the year from Travis Hanson (Bark River) for the only score of the period.

Northland bounced back at 5:42 when Joe Belanger took a shot from the right circle only to be blocked by the Lion’s goaltender Ryan Donovan. However, the puck came back right on Belanger’s stick where he scored on his second chance to bring his team to within one goal. The Lion’s were up 2-1 after two periods.

Even though Finlandia dominated the game by staying in the Lumberjacks end of the rink for most of the game it seemed like the game would go down to the end before the winner would be known. Northland was able to keep Finlandia at bay from scoring despite the high volume of shots on their goaltender Daniel McIntosh. However, Joe Beaudry added his fifteenth goal of the year at 14:11 from Brandon VanAcker (Lincoln Park) and Brad Van Tassel (Hancock). Adding to this was a power play goal from Mike Parks (Marquette) from Ryan Sullivan (Marquette) at 17:03 to put the Lion’s up 4-1. Brandon VanAcker ended the scoring at 18:33 with an shorthanded unassisted goal for his fifth of the season.

Sullivan's Late Goal Gives Finlandia Harris Cup Crown - March 4, 2007

The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Championship ended in a great battle between the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Finlandia University on Sunday in Hancock, Mich. After two ties and two lead changes, the Finlandia Lions are the 2007 Harris Cup Champions by a score of 4-3. With just 51 seconds to play , Ryan Sullivan (Marquette, MI) scored his second goal of the game to give the Lions the crown.

“Wow, this is unbelievable … the feeling is just incredible,” Finlandia head coach Joe Burcar said. “I am extremely happy for the players. They have paid their dues and are deserving of this. This is why you play the game.”

The Lions were down 2-0 in the first period and saw MSOE tie the game at 3-3 with about six minutes to play, but emerged victorious in front of a packed house at the Houghton County Arena.

“We just kept battling,” Burcar said. “This was two great teams on the ice. There were lots of ups and downs but we kept pushing until we found a way.”

Finlandia held a 3-2 lead when Keith Johnstone (Marquette, MI) scored on a power play 11:06 into the third. MSOE never gave up, getting the equalizer when RG Flath scored his second of the day with 6:01 to play to knot the score at 3-3. Just when everyone was thinking overtime, Sullivan gave his team the lead with a shot from just inside the blue line over the shoulder of the Raider keeper.

The Raiders jumped out to the early lead, getting a breakaway goal from Blair Hanberg 6:03 into the game and Flath's first tally six minutes later to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Lions battled back, with Sullivan lighting the lamp at the 14:36 mark of the first to make it 2-1 at the end of the period. Josh Paquette (Marquette, MI) tied the game at 2-2 in the middle of the second, burying an unassisted goal after a turnover.

Sullivan's heroics earned him MCHA Tournament MVP honors, and he was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Joe Beaudry (Marquette, MI) and Marc Marcotte (Baraga, MI). MSOE's Jason Woll and Blair Hanberg and Lawrence 's Billy Siers and Andrew Isaac rounded out the squad.
