Finlandia Chapel Cross Dedication Is Thursday, April 1
HANCOCK, MI - The cross atop the Finlandia University Chapel of St. Matthew has been permanently illuminated in memory of a 1934 Suomi College alumna and her husband.
On Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 5:30 p.m., the community is invited to join Finlandia and the family of that alumna for a cross and lighting dedication ceremony.
Andrea McAleenan of Santa Monica, Calif., and Karen Richards of San Diego, the daughters of Elaine Halmekangas Hautala (1913-2000), commissioned the cross in 2001, and in 2002 it was installed in Elaine's memory.
This winter, as an ongoing reminder of their parents' spirits and presence, McAleenan and Richards arranged permanent lighting for the cross in remembrance of their father, Edward Henry Hautala (1914-2009).
"This beautiful cross shining in perpetual light is a visual reminder of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ," said McAleenan and Richards. "As it continues to glow through the years, we hope it also will be a reminder to the entire community of the significant history and ongoing mission of Finlandia University."
The Chapel of St. Matthew cross was designed by Finlandia University Art & Design alumnus Craig Fish, who attended Finlandia in 2001 and 2002.
