Finlandia University 2011 Commencement Is Sunday, May 1

HANCOCK, MI - Finlandia University is pleased to announce that its 2011 Commencement exercises will take place Sunday, May 1, 2:00 p.m., at the Paavo Nurmi Center, Hancock. Finlandia will award diplomas to 122 bachelor and associate degree candidates.

Barbara McConnell Barrett, former U.S. Ambassador to Finland, will deliver the 2011 Commencement address and receive an honorary doctoral degree. Barrett has been involved in international business and aviation for over 25 years. Before the age of 30, she was an officer and executive of two Fortune 500 companies.

The Finlandia University Class of 2011 co-Valedictorians are Adam Jeffery, Lake Linden, and Amanda Moyer, Livonia. Adam has completed a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), Amanda a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in integrated design.

Alumnus speaker Allen K. Freis ('76), DePere, Wis., is a wealth management advisor with the Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company. He is a member of the Finlandia University International Alumni Board.

In addition, a Baccalaureate worship service will take place at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, May 1, at the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The Rev. Dale Skogman will deliver the sermon. Rev. Skogman is an emeritus member of the Finlandia University Board of Trustees and a former bishop of the Northern Great Lakes Synod (NGLS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
