Silent Auction, Lunch is February 19, 11 am to 1 pm

HANCOCK, MI - A silent auction and soup and salad lunch fundraiser will take place Saturday, February 19, 2011, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock.

On the menu are Tanzanian vegetable soup, vegan curried carrot soup, chili, and green salad.

Silent auction items include batik fabric and Christmas tree ornaments from Tanzania, hotel passes, merchandise and certificates from local businesses, and handicrafts.

Tickets are $7 per adult (prepaid) or $8 per adult at the door, $5 for students, and $3 for children ages seven to 12 years. Children 6 years and under eat free.

The ticket pays for the lunch and participation in the silent auction. A ticket must be purchased to participate in the auction.

Six Finlandia students and two faculty members will travel to Tanzania May 3 to 23, 2011, for three weeks of service and learning as part of the Finlandia course, Service and Learning in Tanzania.

This is the sixth year of Finlandia's service and learning in Tanzania experience. Since 2006, 40 students have participated. The total cost per student is $3000, and each student's goal is to raise half of the cost through fund-raising.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance by contacting René Johnson at 906-487-7558 or rene.johnson@finlandia.edu.

The Finnish American Heritage Center is located in downtown Hancock at 435 Quincy St.
